Chapter Sixteen
Charlotte entered Bearberry Brews the next morning loaded for bear. No way was Aidan going to win that contest now. It would end âwinner takes all,â all right, with the Delaneys getting everything. Sheâd been up half the night devising a new plan and what sheâd thought up was genius. She hoped her sisters would be just as excited by her new idea.
Misty and Nell were in the service area, setting up. The kitchen was dark, so it didnât look like anyone else was in yet. Which was okay. Their parents were overworked and worried about the business enough. She and her sisters had told them not to concern themselves over the coffee contest, the three girls would organize that with Charlotte at the helm. All they expected from their folks and Lucas was support in the way of supplying extra roasted beans, which theyâd been more than happy to provide.
âGirls,â Charlotte said, shutting the door behind her. âWeâre going to need to order more cups! And lids and napkins. Plus roast more coffee.â
Nell blinked. âWhat? But I thought weâd prepared plenty?â
Misty twisted her lips. âAnd why are you holding that sheet?â
The folded queen-size top sheet in her arms was all pumpkin and harvest themed, part of a set sheâd gotten on sale last winter. âI brought it for the office.â
Misty and Nell stared at each other, then Misty spoke. âWhy?â
âI might still have to work with him, but that doesnât mean Iâve got to look at him.â
Nell shot her a scrutinizing look. âI thought you told Misty nothing happened.â
âRight, nothing happened,â Charlotte said. âBut the point is he was playing me.â
âUm.â Nell pursed her lips. âSort of like you were playing him?â
Charlotte shook her head at Nell. âLike youâre one to talk.â
âThatâs not fair,â Misty said. She finished loading the register and shut the drawer. âNell and Grant worked things out.â
âBut it wasnât easy,â Nell added. âAnd we nearly didnât make it.â
âWhich is whyââMisty got a stubborn gleam in her eyeââwe advised you not to go there with Aidan.â
âThe only place I went with Aidan was to an oyster festival. Besides that.â Charlotte squared her shoulders. âMy situation with him is nothing like Grant and Nellâs.â She stared at her oldest sister. âYou wanted to make Grant fall in love with you.â
âOnly at first!â She frowned. âAnd then he ticked me off, and I didnât.â
âRight! See? Thatâs where I am with Aidan. I donât want him to actually fall for me. I just want to tempt him enough so heâs sorry when he canât have me.â
Nellâs eyebrows arched. âSo, how did that go? The tempting?â
Charlotte flushed hot. âItâs not how youâre making it sound. Okay?â
Nell crossed her arms. âThen nothing really happened?â
âNo.â
âHe didnât kiss you?â
Charlotte laughed and rolled her eyes. âAs if.â It had been more of a mutual tackle. She really needed to get her hormones under control. But Aidan hadnât been completely blameless. Heâd lost control of himselfâand the situationâtoo. Thatâs why she doubted Aidan would say anything about their brief amorous encounter to anyone.
