Chapter Sixteen

Charlotte entered Bearberry Brews the next morning loaded for bear. No way was Aidan going to win that contest now. It would end “winner takes all,” all right, with the Delaneys getting everything. She’d been up half the night devising a new plan and what she’d thought up was genius. She hoped her sisters would be just as excited by her new idea.

Misty and Nell were in the service area, setting up. The kitchen was dark, so it didn’t look like anyone else was in yet. Which was okay. Their parents were overworked and worried about the business enough. She and her sisters had told them not to concern themselves over the coffee contest, the three girls would organize that with Charlotte at the helm. All they expected from their folks and Lucas was support in the way of supplying extra roasted beans, which they’d been more than happy to provide.

“Girls,” Charlotte said, shutting the door behind her. “We’re going to need to order more cups! And lids and napkins. Plus roast more coffee.”

Nell blinked. “What? But I thought we’d prepared plenty?”

Misty twisted her lips. “And why are you holding that sheet?”

The folded queen-size top sheet in her arms was all pumpkin and harvest themed, part of a set she’d gotten on sale last winter. “I brought it for the office.”

Misty and Nell stared at each other, then Misty spoke. “Why?”

“I might still have to work with him, but that doesn’t mean I’ve got to look at him.”

Nell shot her a scrutinizing look. “I thought you told Misty nothing happened.”

“Right, nothing happened,” Charlotte said. “But the point is he was playing me.”

“Um.” Nell pursed her lips. “Sort of like you were playing him?”

Charlotte shook her head at Nell. “Like you’re one to talk.”

“That’s not fair,” Misty said. She finished loading the register and shut the drawer. “Nell and Grant worked things out.”

“But it wasn’t easy,” Nell added. “And we nearly didn’t make it.”

“Which is why”—Misty got a stubborn gleam in her eye—“we advised you not to go there with Aidan.”

“The only place I went with Aidan was to an oyster festival. Besides that.” Charlotte squared her shoulders. “My situation with him is nothing like Grant and Nell’s.” She stared at her oldest sister. “You wanted to make Grant fall in love with you.”

“Only at first!” She frowned. “And then he ticked me off, and I didn’t.”

“Right! See? That’s where I am with Aidan. I don’t want him to actually fall for me. I just want to tempt him enough so he’s sorry when he can’t have me.”

Nell’s eyebrows arched. “So, how did that go? The tempting?”

Charlotte flushed hot. “It’s not how you’re making it sound. Okay?”

Nell crossed her arms. “Then nothing really happened?”

“No.”

“He didn’t kiss you?”

Charlotte laughed and rolled her eyes. “As if.” It had been more of a mutual tackle. She really needed to get her hormones under control. But Aidan hadn’t been completely blameless. He’d lost control of himself—and the situation—too. That’s why she doubted Aidan would say anything about their brief amorous encounter to anyone.
